Resource: Renter Letter to Landlords (COVID-19)

I believe housing is a human right and we must protect renters as much as possible doing this time.  This is why I spoke on record early on  to ensure all renters in Pomona are not displaced doing the coronavirus crisis.

Are you struggling with your rent? Please know the City of Pomona currently has a rent eviction moratorium in place where you cannot get evicted for nonpayment of your rent.

Please find this attached letter created by a local community organizer at our very own Pomona Economic Opportunity Center to assist renters when speaking  with their landlords:

Re: Inability to pay rent for April 2020 due to COVID-19 crisis

Dear [NOMBRE DE DUEÑO/A O GERENTE]:

I am a tenant at the above address and am party to a standing rental agreement with you. I am writing to inform you that as a result of the current health and economic crisis, I am unable to pay rent this month.

I have been out of work since [FECHA], due to the government response to COVID-19, and have consequently suffered a substantial loss of income. I retain verifiable documentation from my employer that I can provide at the appropriate time.

As you likely know, on March 27, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued order N-37-20, which makes writs of eviction unenforceable during the period that the order is in effect.

Furthermore, on March 19, Director of Emergency Services for the City of Pomona issued an executive order enacting a temporary moratorium on evictions due to non-payment of rent by residential tenants impacted by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

I understand that neither of these orders relieve me from the liability of unpaid rent, but I request forgiveness for this month’s rent. If you are unable to offer forgiveness as this time, I request a reasonable time period in which to pay back rent.

Please acknowledge this letter in writing and inform me whether you will forgive the rent or establish a payment plan with me.

Sincerely,

[NOMBRE]
