Why I’m Running

I am running for Pomona City Council because it’s time to take action to address the urgent needs of our community. I am running for District #6 to make a difference. After moving around to several different foster homes throughout Los Angeles County I came to Pomona at the age of 15 years old and it has been my home ever since. I was lucky at 15 years old to meet who I call my heart mom, Lisa. You can’t imagine the joy I felt when Lisa told me I had a home with her. It changed my life. After high school I earned a BA degree from Cal State LA in Sociology, and later studied abroad in London where I earned my Masters degree in Human Rights Law from SOAS University of London. 

As a child welfare advocate, in 2009 I was selected to intern in Washington, DC to work in the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. While working in Speaker Pelosi’s office, I helped draft a federal policy brief which included recommendations for more evidence based mentorship programs for foster youth.  As a child welfare advocate, I have had the opportunity to work on the local, state, and federal levels to help draft and implement policies to assist lawyers, judges, and social workers to be better equipped to assist foster youth transitioning out of foster care.

My personal life experiences, training and education exhibit the dedication to public service and passion we need in government.

Pomona is where I gained stability and consistency to be my best self. Now it’s time for me to give back to our community what it gave to me. 

I am running for office because I have a plan to take action to address our local issues. 

In my first 100 days of office, these will be my priorities:

  • From blight to bright! I will have the Pomona Planning Department complete a full report of all of the vacant and abandoned lots in District 6. Once the report is completed, I will invite Pomona residents to a special community meeting to hear the details of the report.  
  • Bring down the cost of housing. I will work with our Council to create a vacancy tax for property owners and management companies who do not do their part. 
    • I will work with our City Council to create a housing ordinance ensuring that any future housing developments will set aside 20-30% for affordable housing. 
    • The vacancy tax will ensure that we maintain mutually beneficial partnerships with businesses to contribute to the City’s economic growth.
  • Let’s be smart on crime! I want to increase safety in our communities and reform police practices with oversight committees, and use models that work to improve safety and build community.
  • Expand Arts programs and creative programs for youth. We need to ensure that our young people have opportunities to explore their creativity through arts and cultural programs. 
  • Improve delivery of public services. As a product of the foster care system, I want to make sure our valuable resources are going to the right places and making a difference.
  • Support small businesses, fair living wages, Pomona as a place for business, and improve public transportation.

I am a lifelong Democrat. I live in Pomona with my daughter Jayla and my heart Mom Lisa. I hope to have your vote Tuesday, November 3rd.

    I’d love to volunteer in some way. I met Miranda at a protest in support of Black Lives back in June and I live in the El Sereno Apartments.
